The final Eurostat data on annual inflation in the euro area in May coincided with a preliminary estimate of 1.2% and confirmed the forecasts of economists. Last month, inflation slowed relative to its April value of 1.7%. Relative to the previous month, consumer prices rose by 0.1%, while economists had predicted an increase of 0.2%. This figure also slowed growth against the April rise of 0.7%. Annual inflation, which does not take into account the prices of food, alcohol and energy carriers, was 0.8% in May against its April value of 1.3%. Food, alcohol, and tobacco products have risen in price for the year by 1.5%. The cost of energy rose by 3.8%, services – by 1%. At the same time, Romania had the highest level of inflation – 4.4%, Cyprus – the lowest inflation rate of 0.2%.
