Interfax Global Gas Analytics expert, Andrew Walker, believes that the rise in prices for liquefied natural gas threatens the market of this fuel over the long term. According to the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan, spot prices for LNG in the country last winter rose above $10 per 1 million British thermal units for the first time in 3 years. A number of experts, including JERA President Yuji Kakimi, believe that a period of low prices is needed to stimulate investment in infrastructure for imports and the interest of long-term consumers of the industry. Because of rising prices, LNG will be difficult to compete with alternative sources of energy, including coal and renewable sources.
