The National Bank of Belgium announced a new absolute record on the volume of funds in savings accounts in banks of the country, which at the end of June 2018 reached 265 billion 800 million euros. The previous record at the level of 265 billion euros was recorded in August 2016. In June, the volume of funds in savings accounts grew by 1 billion 400 million euros in comparison with May. Since the beginning of the year, the increase amounted to 5 billion 600 million euros. Many Belgian banks offer consumers a statutory minimum of 0.11% while maintaining extremely low interest rates throughout the euro area. As the Belgian newspaper L'Echo writes, however, it does not restrain growth of savings in the accounts.
