In August 2018, consumer prices in Italy, calculated by national standards, increased by 1.7% in annual terms, preliminary data of the statistical agency Istat show. Compared to the July price increase of 1.5%, inflation accelerated in August. Analysts had expected inflation at 1.4%. Compared to the previous month, prices increased by 0.5%, while the experts had expected growth of 0.2%. Without taking into account the price of energy, food and alcohol, consumer prices increased in August by 0.9% in annual terms. Food products went up by 2.4%, alcoholic beverages and tobacco products - by 3%, clothing and footwear - by 0.1%. Transport costs increased by 4%. According to EU standards, consumer prices in the country grew by 1.7% in annual terms and by 0.1% per month.
