The Japanese economy in the fourth quarter of last year increased by 0.5% compared with the third quarter and by 1.9% compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Such a final assessment of the state of the Japanese economy in the last quarter of 2018 was reported by the Economic and Social Research Institute of the country. Its quarterly estimate increased from a previously announced growth of 0.3%. The estimate for annual growth was improved from an expected 1.4% increase. The main contribution to the improvement of quarterly indicators was made by business investments, which grew by 2.7% compared to the previous quarter, instead of the previously expected growth by 2.4%. At the same time, government spending showed a more significant drop of 1.7% against a previously announced decline of 1.2%. Growth in consumer spending was at 0.4%.
