The volume of retail sales in the UK increased in April compared to March by 1.6% and compared with April last year - by 1.4%, according to the Office for National Statistics. Analysts had expected growth of the first indicator by 0.9%, the second one - by 0.2%. Sales growth was due to warm weather and gradual stabilization of inflation. Without taking into account automobile fuel, retail sales increased by 1.3% in monthly terms and by 1.5% in annual terms. The growth in sales of motor fuel in value terms by 4.7% was mainly due to higher prices for it. Compared to March, sales in grocery stores increased by 1.4%, in clothing and footwear stores - by 1.6%, in stores of home goods - by 2.5%.
