Retail sales in the UK rose 0.3% this August after rising 0.9% in July, data from the Office for National Statistics showed. For economists, who had expected sales to fall by 0.2%, the growth of the index was a surprise. In annual terms, the volume of retail sales in the country increased by 3.3% with the forecasted increase by 2.3%. The growth of sales was promoted by the hottest summer in the history of Great Britain. Excluding fuel for cars, sales growth was 3.5% compared to July and 3.5% compared to the same month in 2017. From the beginning of the year to August, retail sales grew by 3.4% year-on-year.
