Car sales in the UK fall for the fifth consecutive month in January. The reason was the drop in demand from businesses and car parks, according to the data of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). Sales of new cars decreased by 1.6% in January year-on-year to just over 161 thousand cars. The demand from private buyers grew by 2.9%. Business reduced demand by a third, car fleet - by 3.4%. In 2019, the demand for electric cars began to grow. Sales of electric cars and hybrid models increased by 26.3%. The share of cars on alternative fuel rose to 6.8%. SMMT analysts expect the market to expand by a quarter by the end of 2019 to 177,000 cars. The registration of cars on diesel fuel, by contrast, fell by 20.3%. Sales of traditional vehicles will fall in the near future, despite the fact that the demand for gasoline rose 7.3% in January.
