Unemployment in Spain has fallen to a record low in the last 10 years, the Spanish Statistical Office (INE) reports. In the last quarter of 2018, the unemployment rate in the country dropped to 14.45% from 14.55% in the previous quarter. The number of unemployed shortened by 21.7 thousand, which became possible due to the growth of employment in agriculture and construction. In 2013, unemployment in Spain rose to a record 27%. The US mortgage crisis in 2008 led to a five-year recession that affected the labor market in developed countries. Employment rates are subject to seasonal factors, such as tourism, which accounts for 12% of production, and agriculture. The number of people employed in Spain increased by 2.98% or 566.2 thousand people in the fourth quarter of 2018. This is the maximum growth since 2016. The number of employees increased in agriculture, construction, services and industry. In the fourth quarter of 2017, employment growth was recorded in all sectors except industry. The number of Spaniards working or looking for work in Q4 increased by 103.8 thousand people to 22.87 million people.
