The growth rates of British food retailers are far behind the German discounters Aldi and Lidl, Kantar Worldpanel said. Over 12 weeks to 12 August, sales of the largest retailer Tesco rose by 1.8%, helped by the rise in stores of the Express chain. The company reduced its market share by 0.5% to 27.4%. Sales of its main competitor, J Sainsbury, grew by 1.2% due to an increase in online sales and demand for premium products of the Taste the Difference line. The market share, however, decreased by 0.4% to 15.5%. Meanwhile, German Aldi increased its market share by 0.6% to 7.6%, having increased sales by 12.6%. Sales of German Lidl increased by 8.6%, its market share reached 5.5%.
