Disney has just unlocked another Cinderella run courtesy of Frozen 2’s highest-grossing weekend in the entire history of Thanksgiving in the U.S. It posted $123.7 million domestically over the five day holiday weekend.
“Frozen 2” edged out previous record-holder “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” which recorded $109 million in 2013.
A sequel to the 2013 animated film, Frozen 2 presents the continuation of the adventures of Princess Anna, Queen Elsa, and Olaf the snowman. In 12 days, the movie has amassed $738.6 million globally.
During its opening weekend, Frozen 2 earned $130 million domestically. That set the record as the highest-grossing debut for Walt Disney Animation Studios. On the global scale, Frozen 2 also set the record for the biggest global opening for an animated film ever with $358 million.
“Frozen 2” is also set to join the $1 billion club for Disney films as the sixth member.
The box office of North America was down by almost 7% before the black Friday sale. The movie lifted the sales and trimmed the deficit to 5.6% from the same time period in 2018, Comscore reported.
